Sabra L. Klein, Ph.D.
Current Position:
Assistant Professor, Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Research Interests/Grant support:
My research focuses on the hormonal and immunological mechanisms mediating sex differences in susceptibility to infectious diseases. To examine sex differences in infection, I work with rodent malaria parasites, hantaviruses, and influenza viruses. I selected these pathogens because the prevalence and intensity of these infectious agents is higher in males than females. The main strength of my research program is that it combines organismal, physiological, and molecular approaches to study host-pathogen interactions.
Grant Support: R01 AI054995 (PI) Cellular and Molecular Mediators of Hantavirus Infection; Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute Pilot Grant (PI) Genetic and Hormonal Mediators of Sex Differences in Malarial Infection.
Relevant Experience:
Steering Committee, Malaria Research Institute, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2002-2007); External Advisory Committee, Peromyscus Stock Center, University of South Carolina (2005-2007); Program Committee Chair, Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (2007-2008); Executive Board Member, Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (2007-2008).
