A Statement From The President

With increasing emphasis on personalized medicine and effective outcomes based on pharmacogenomics, inclusion of sex as a parameter and potential source of medical, pharmacological and scientific variability is essential and synonymous with good science.  The Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) was created by scientists from across a wide range of disciplines and research areas who agreed on a common need: a place for sharing their work and for learning from each other to advance research on biological differences between males and females.  This unique interdisciplinary group joins together to promote the science of sex/gender differences to the scientific and medical community and the public through research, education, communication, translation and advocacy.

Our annual meeting showcases top research into differences between males and females in both health and disease.  In addition, the launch of our official journal, Biology of Sex Differences, offers the scientific community a forum for publishing and rapid electronic dissemination of their work on sex differences from genetic and molecular mechanisms to behavior and evolution.

During the coming year, emphasis will be given to developing new educational materials for graduate/medical curriculum and to working toward increasing awareness of sex differences research among policy makers and funding agency.  These activities are critical to educate and sustain research for the next generation of scientists and clinical investigators who investigate and apply their knowledge toward improving health outcomes for both males and females.

The time is right for the OSSD to make valuable and lasting contributions to advancing science and medicine.  I am honored to have been elected to the Office of President of OSSD.  I invite you to join us and share your ideas in developing the discipline of the study of sex differences in these exciting times.
