What is the relationship between the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences and the Society for Women’s Health Research?
The Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) is an international society for basic and clinical scientists from across scientific disciplines who share an interest in exploring sex and gender differences in all areas of biological, medical, and behavioral science. The overall mission of OSSD is to enhance the knowledge of sex and gender differences by facilitating communication and collaboration among scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds. OSSD activities are directed by a Council and Officers elected by the members. The OSSD holds an annual scientific meeting and is working toward publishing a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The first annual meeting of the OSSD was held in May 2007.
The OSSD is the brain child of basic and clinical scientists with established research commitments to the study of sex differences, and staff members of the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR). It emerged from conversations at two science programs of SWHR: the Annual Conference on Sex and Gene Expression, and the Isis Fund Network on Sex, Gender, Drugs, and the Brain.
Scientifically, the OSSD is an independent organization. OSSD programs – currently the website, annual meeting, and journal - are directed by the OSSD Council and its committees. SWHR provides fiscal support for OSSD and provides staff with established expertise in program management, fundraising and development, public communication, and government relations.
The relationship between OSSD and SWHR is a unique partnership of the academic and not-for-profit sectors that is forged by a common commitment to advancing knowledge about sex differences and their impact on the health of individuals.
