Susan K. Fried, Ph.D.

    

Current Position:


Susan K. Fried, Ph.D. is Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, Department of Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Research Scientist in the Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center at the Baltimore Veteran's Administration Medical Center. She is also the Director of the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit of Maryland, a NIH-supported center.

Research Interests/Grant support:


Dr. Fried's research focuses on adipocyte biology, specifically sex- and depot-differences, and she has authored over 60 peer-reviewed papers. Her research program is mainly supported by grants from NIDDK, NIH, in addition to the Isis Fund and pharmaceutical basic research projects.

Relevant Experience:


Dr Fried received an A.B. in Biology at Barnard College in 1974, and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from Columbia University in 1980. She was post-doctoral trainee in Endocrinology at Emory University, and Lipid Biochemistry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was an Asst. Professor at Rockefeller University (Laboratory of Human Behavior and Metabolism) and a then rose through the academic ranks to Professor at Rutgers University (Dept of Nutritional Sciences). Dr. Fried has served on numerous NIH study panels and is currently an Associate Editor of the journal Obesity, the official journal of the Obesity Society (TOS/NAASO). She has been active in a number of scientific societies including the NAASO (8 years on council), The American Society for Nutrition, and the American Physiological Society.
